Home in the Hokianga

Our house
nestles into the top of a promontory
overlooking the harbour

Water stretches in all directions
as far as the eye can see
protected by steep-sided bush-covered hills
edged by mangroves
and fed by multiple sources
rivers, creeks, streams, the Tasman Sea,
rain
Sea mist and morning cloud
often nestles
in the nooks and crannies of the land
slowly retreating as the sun heats up
slowly revealing the layers of hills and valleys
which frame the expanse of sea and estuaries
moved by the changing tides
patterned by the influx of rivers
rippled by breezes which come and go
and reflecting the clouds and colours
of both land and sky
